Manchester City’s midfield maestro is still driving on his team as they chase more silverware

Manchester City’s midfield maestro Kevin De Bruyne is still one of the major driving forces behind City’s chase for a Premier League/FA Cup double this season. His drive and determination helped the champions overcome a determined Nottingham Forest yesterday. The three points could prove to be invaluable come season’s end.

As with all games at this stage of the season, there was immense pressure on Manchester City to pick up another three points yesterday. With Arsenal having beaten Tottenham before City’s game against Forest had kicked off, the pressure in the title race had shifted onto Pep Guardiola’s side.

It became apparent during the early stages of yesterday’s game that Nottingham Forest was up for the visit of the champions. To keep their title destiny in their hands, Manchester City would need to dig deep and rely on their key players to lead them to a vital victory. It was once again Kevin De Bruyne, who stepped up for the world champions.

While it wasn’t De Bruyne’s best performance, he set up both of City’s goals in their 2-nil win. Both of his assists came at the ideal time to help his team leave the City Ground with all three points. His first came in the 31st minute as his brilliantly taken corner allowed Josko Gvardiol to head home City’s opener. The second assist from Manchester City’s midfield maestro came in the 71st minute as his precise through ball played through Erling Haaland to settle the game.

At times in football timing is everything. The timing of Kevin De Bruyne’s contribution was critical in picking up a vital three points. With Phil Foden out with illness and several of his teammates having off days due to a determined Nottingham Forest side, someone had to inspire City to victory. Once again, it was Manchester City’s midfield maestro who stepped when his team needed him the most. It was a performance reminiscent of De Bruyne’s against Chelsea in City’s FA Cup semi-final win. De Bruyne wasn’t at his best, but he was arguably the most decisive factor in a victory for Manchester City.

Since returning from injury, Kevin De Bruyne’s performances have been crucial in City’s hunt for silverware this season. He has more assists in all competitions than any other player in the Premier League. That fact is astounding, considering he missed 5 months of this season due to  hamstring surgery.
